Ingredients
  

  • 12 lasagna sheets
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 2 cups tomato passata or crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  3. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft.
  4. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add ground beef and cook until browned.
  6. Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  7. Simmer the meat sauce for 15–20 minutes until thickened.
  8. In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  9. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  10. Gradually add milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
  11. Cook until thick and smooth, then season with nutmeg and salt.
  12. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in a baking dish.
  13. Add a layer of lasagna sheets.
  14. Spread meat sauce over pasta sheets.
  15. Pour a layer of béchamel sauce.
  16. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese.
  17. Repeat layers until ingredients are used, finishing with béchamel and cheeses on top.
  18. Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  19. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

You can prepare the meat sauce a day ahead for deeper flavor.
Allow lasagna to rest before cutting to maintain clean slices.
Substitute ground beef with a mix of beef and pork for richer taste.
Cover with foil if the top browns too quickly while baking.
Leftovers taste even better the next day and store well in the refrigerator.
