Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, melt sugar over medium heat until golden caramel forms.
- Pour caramel into the bottom of a round baking dish, tilting to coat evenly.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
- Pour custard mixture over the caramel in the dish.
- Place the dish in a larger baking pan filled with hot water (water bath).
- Bake for 45–50 minutes until the center is set but slightly jiggly.
- Remove from oven and cool to room temperature, then refrigerate at least 4 hours.
- To serve, run a knife around edges and invert onto a plate.
Notes
- Use a water bath to prevent cracking and ensure a smooth texture.
- Allow flan to chill thoroughly for best slicing.
- Can be garnished with fresh berries or whipped cream.
