Ultimate Homemade Traditional Apple Pie Recipe

Ingredients
  

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed
  • 6 –8 tbsp ice water
  • 6 cups fresh apples peeled, sliced
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp butter for topping
  • 1 egg for egg wash

Method
 

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar until combined.
  2. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add ice water gradually and form dough; chill 30 minutes.
  4. Roll out half the dough and line a 9-inch pie dish.
  5. In another bowl, toss apples with sugars, flour, spices, and lemon juice.
  6. Fill pie crust with apple mixture and dot with butter.
  7. Roll out remaining dough and place over filling (lattice or full crust).
  8. Brush top with beaten egg and seal edges.
  9. Bake at 200 °C (400 °F) for 20 minutes.
  10. Reduce heat to 180 °C (350 °F) and bake 30 minutes more.
  11. Cool pie before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for best flavor depth.
Keep butter and water very cold for a flaky crust.
If crust browns too fast, cover edges with foil.
Pie tastes even better after resting a few hours.
